In a world of fast furniture and mass production, there’s something truly special about restoring a beloved piece and giving it a second life. Whether it’s a treasured family heirloom or a vintage gem picked up at a local market, custom upholstery in Northern Ireland offers a sustainable, stylish, and meaningful alternative to buying new.
At Shabby Rose Upholstery, based in County Antrim and proudly serving customers across Northern Ireland, I specialise in transforming well-loved furniture into beautiful, functional pieces that fit seamlessly into your home. If you’ve ever wondered whether reupholstery is the right choice for you, this guide will walk you through the process — and show you why custom upholstery is more popular than ever.

Why Choose Upholstery Over Buying New?
There are plenty of reasons to consider reupholstering your existing furniture. First and foremost, it’s a more sustainable option. Instead of sending worn or outdated pieces to landfill, upholstery allows you to re-use and re-love what you already have — or rescue something with real character and potential.
It’s also cost-effective in many cases, especially when compared with the price of a well-made new item. Older furniture is often built with superior craftsmanship and solid materials, making it well worth investing in. And, unlike new furniture from the high street, upholstered pieces can be tailored to suit your individual style, home and taste.
What Can Be Upholstered?
At Shabby Rose Upholstery, I work on a wide variety of pieces — from antique armchairs and vintage cocktail chairs to bedroom stools, dining chairs, and more. Whether your piece needs a full transformation or just a fresh new fabric, I’ll work with you to achieve the perfect finish. I don't usually take on suites or large sofas however.
Choosing the Right Fabric
One of the best parts of commissioning a custom upholstered piece is selecting the fabric. I have access to a wide range of designer fabrics in all kinds of textures, patterns, and colours — whether you're looking for something bold and modern or classic and understated.
If you already have a fabric in mind, or wish to supply your own, I’m more than happy to work with that too. I can send fabric samples via picture, or you’re very welcome to visit the workshop by appointment to view them in person.
How the Process Works
Getting started is easy. If you have a piece of furniture you’d like to have upholstered:
Send a photo of your piece via email (info@shabbyroseni.co.uk) or WhatsApp (07866010898) for a rough quote.
Choose your fabric – I can send options or arrange a time for you to visit the workshop.
Confirm the details – Once we’ve agreed on fabric, trims, and finishes, I’ll give you a timeframe for completion.
Relax while I bring your piece back to life – Every item is carefully restored in my Antrim-based workshop with attention to both comfort and quality.
An Increase in Upholstery Enquiries across Northern Ireland
Across Northern Ireland, more and more people are choosing upholstery not just for sustainability, but for the opportunity to own something unique and personal. Whether it’s a statement ottoman, a nostalgic armchair, or a family piece passed down through generations, upholstered furniture adds warmth, personality, and charm to any home.
As someone who has spent years restoring furniture with care and creativity, I know the joy that comes from seeing a once-tired piece transformed into something beautiful and functional again.
